Magic Realism
Magic/unusual part:

Humans can basically read people’s thoughts but only once in their whole lives, the longer they haven’t used it the longer they can read people’s minds. So, for example, a kid of 9 years old can only read like 5 seconds of minds when a 65-year-old can read up to an hour or more. Its not that heavily ingrained in society but it is like a random question people can ask about. “Have you used it yet?” “Yeah once during like kindergarten, it was just a kid thinking about food” “Oh cool I used it to cheat on tests once…and both of us got it wrong” “ Ah yes basic basic”
Plot:

The plot could be surrounding I guess an intelligence agency, how the main character would use the ability in an extremely crucial moment
-
Maybe main character was saving it for a personal reason for when the mom is passing away or something but had to use it to get the password of a bomb from a terrorist
-
Then angst everywhere

Or another plot where this one person can use it multiple times, but I think that is borderline fantasy/sci-fi
-
Usual secret kid is more powerful than others type thing but could also tie into the previous idea but the power will only stop when their hearts highest fulfillment is achieved
-
Main character death would be fun

Or fluffy love story of the user using that one time to gauge whether the partner is in love with them or not
-
Making it queer cause I never write queer before so that might be fun
-
Research needed
-
Intense moments
-
Lesser sexual tension more softer moments
-
Make it high school theme
-
Maybe tie it to some homophobic instances of insecurity which is why they used it at this moment
